Hear From Athletes

“Following a disappointing meeting with a leading orthopaedic surgeon in August 2023, I was advised that I required a full ACL reconstruction. As a gym owner and coach, this was not something I wanted to rush into. I reached out to Tim who undertook a thorough review of my MRI results and we discussed my symptoms in detail (online). We agreed to undertake a conservative approach and checked in regularly to assess my progress.

With Tim’s guidance, I avoided ACL surgery and was able to return to light sparring in early 2024 and full sparring a few months later. I have since remained injury free and can’t recommend Tim highly enough for any combat sports athlete faced with orthopaedic injuries.”

THE BLACK BELT REHAB SYSTEM

Tim combines his Maststers degree in Sports and Exercise Medicine with his black belt in jiu jitsu to offer specialist services for grappling and combat sports athletes to manage their pain and injuries.

Tim understands first-hand the challenges of seeking health professional support from people who don't have experience in the sport or an understanding of the unique demands placed on athletes.

As a black belt with experience training and competing nationally and internationally, Tim understand the importance of mat time for your training progression and mental health. That's the reason Tim advocates for continued training around injuries, and will never tell athletes to stop training completely. We might agree that you need to take a few steps back in intensity and follow a return to grappling framework, but you'll never need to step away completely.

Tim worked for over 12 years in rugby, developing my diagnosis, treatment and rehab skills, and has 15 years of clinical experience in the UK and Australia. Much of Tim's time is now focused on education and research, but is fortunate to now dedicate clinical time on working with combat sports and grappling athletes.

Here are a few reasons I'm well suited to working with grappling and combat sports athletes:

  • A black belt in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu under Lachlan Giles

  • Master's thesis on injury prevention in combat sports completed, meaning I understand how to apply the research as it relates to injury prevention and performance enhancement for athletes in this sport

  • A current researcher in pain and physical activity, so I understand what's essential for physically active people to move past pain and injury

  • I have a solid understanding of the modern grappling game, including positional details which can contribute to injury. I can help you return to the mats sooner, with less chance of re-injury

  • Passionate about helping combat sports athletes spend more time on the mats doing the sport they love.

Sport Specific Services include:

  • Clinical diagnosis to help you understand your pain and injury

  • Help to control your pain

  • Sport-specific rehabilitation plans

  • Injury prevention and load management plans.

Common Injuries I can support include:

  • Post-surgical and non-surgical management of ACL tears

  • Muscle strains

  • Ligament sprains

  • Joint hyperextension injuries

  • Meniscal tears and joint diseases

  • Low back and neck pain

  • Ankle instability

  • Shoulder pain.
